“I Spy” Phonics Worksheets that Students AND Teachers LOVE

“I Spy” activities are a timeless favorite amongst school-aged children, whether they’re scanning their environment for items that match a clue (I Spy with my little eye, something that is GREEN), or perusing a magazine with “hidden picture” pages. Applying an “I Spy” framework to phonics concepts creates opportunities for extra practice that both students and teachers love!

Why "I Spy" Phonics Worksheets Work for Students

Regardless of where you are on your Scope and Sequence, there’s an I Spy page your students can use for extra decoding practice. Here’s why they’re great for students:

  • Turns reading into an interactive game. The most obvious reason why “I Spy” phonics pages work for students is that they’re FUN! Students love the challenge of searching through the visual scene to find the words they’re reading.
  • Taps into vocabulary knowledge.  After reading the target words, students must find the matching pictures. This means that students must know or “figure out” what each word looks like. Research supports the notion that pairing written words with visual images creates stronger, “dual-encoded” memories, which improves comprehension and future recall.
  • Supports English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities. Students learning English as a new language benefit significantly from adding picture support as they learn new words. Similarly, students with language-based disabilities benefit from vocabulary development within their phonics instruction.
  • Incorporates visual tracking and attention. Research indicates a significant correlation between reading difficulties and visual impairments. The “I Spy” format forces students to closely attend to the visual field presented. Students must focus on the relevant visual information and disregard the irrelevant, or distracting, pictures that do not match any of the words.

Why Teachers Love
"I Spy" Phonics Worksheets

“I Spy” phonics pages work for teachers just as well as they work for students! Here’s why:

  • NO PREP. Find the pages that correspond to the target skill, print, and go.
  • Reinforces classroom learning. With pages for all syllable types and phonics patterns, you can always find a page that supports the classroom objectives.
  • Easy to differentiate. It’s always helpful to have a resource that spans multiple concepts so that students who need a review can gain extra practice, while students who work at a quicker pace can be given a challenge.
  • Assessment tool. Asking a student to complete an I Spy page independently can give insight into their present strengths and weaknesses. For example, if a student returns a page with no errors, the teacher can infer that that student can decode the words and has the vocabulary knowledge to find the pictures. On the contrary, if a student has trouble with a page, the teacher can probe deeper to determine if it’s a decoding issue or a vocabulary/word identification problem.
  • Varied tasks. Each I Spy set comes with two variations of worksheets, the first being a direct read-and-match and the second requiring students to determine real versus nonsense words.
  • Multiple uses. I Spy phonics worksheets can be used as homework, extra practice for small groups, independent work for early finishers, partner work, or substitute teacher plans.
